What will your Twitter account be worth in 5 years or more?

Peace people.  I have not posted for a while for a couple of reasons. However this post is not about why I have not posted in the past week and half. This post is about the growing trend and popularity of  Twitter and how it could rock your domain empire in a couple of years. If you are still sitting on the fence, stop wasting your time. Time waits for no man. Figure out what this social media bug is all about just as I have and still currently doing. My online career as a marketer started on ebay and I was a powerseller for 3 years. There is a reason I mention this fact in this post. It is because from my ebay experiences I am inclined to believe something similar might happen to Twitter though it is a different industry.

I do not want to waste your time so I will hit the nail on the  head. I believe that years from now, people will be selling there Twitter accounts for profit. I witness an ebay account sell for thousands of dollars while some ebay account with inventory have fetched  very high figures in the past. I am not sure that trend has continued on ebay.  Note that it might be against ebay rules but it still happened and probably still happening.

I believe that in future a Twitter account with targeted followers will be very attractive to investors or people interested in that market. I also believe that some smart cookies might decide to sell domain names packaged with complete Twitter account and followers. I also believe that  XYZ.com with a Twittter account user name “XYZ” will be more attractive in future than if someone else already has the Twitter account.

No one knows tomorrow. Any attempt to foresee the future is simply figments of my imagination.

While we are at it, you may follow me at  Twitter. Username is SkyDomains

I’m not sure how Twitter will play out, but even usernames without followers could still be valuable. Say, if you had username ‘NewYork’ with no followers, someone involved in New York tourism or media might be interested anyway. The importance of number of followers can be misleading, some follow others just to try to get more followers themselves, so like you say these followers have to be ‘targetted’ and interested to be of value. I’ve seen one guy offer to sell his twitter account on ebay, and another guy has had a few offers on a generic username, but that’s all so far. By the way, it is against twitter TOS to sell an account, but I’m sure it will happen anyway.

  • Twitter is still very immature.. I think there is some truth to your prediction, and you never know…but getting the followers in masses is tons of hard work.. A lot harder than most would think :)

I understand where you are going with this but twitter already has a clause that allows people with TMs or legit uses to have a twitter account if owned by another person. I am sure this will expand more when they see people selling twitter accounts. As Robb has said that selling twitter accounts is against the TOS. On top of that twitter will ban your ip address not just the account you are trying to use if you get banned BTW.
