What are you doing now?

What are you doing now? the most popular question in Facebook, right? Well I was just wondering what my fellow domainers are doing right now. I will start, I went to enom.com and was just checking out the premium names .TV registry is hoarding. There are 53050 of them ranging in  from 500K  per year to 100 per year. Here is a quick sample

Bussiness.tv 500000
real.tv 150000
usa.tv 100000
streaming.tv 100000
stream.tv 100000
millionaire.tv 100000
loans.tv 100000
jobs.tv 100000
international.tv 100000

spain.tv 15000
sound.tv 15000
purchase.tv 15000
policias.tv 15000
new.tv 15000

Ok I am realy disliking .TV  at this moment. Granted I have never been much of a fan but I am so mad that they want to charge yearly rentals for their nice names. What is more, they can raise the rent whenever they wish. Personaly I would rather buy furnitureTV.com or SurfingTV.com from the secondary market than pay 20k every year for Furniture.TV and 25K For Surfing.TV . The money I would have used for renewals  yearly, I can use that in branding. The general public tend to end every domain with .com anyway.

Get this Policias.com is only 2000 EUR and you own it, why would I pay 15k yearly to rent policias.TV ? (By the way I do not own any of the domains in this post and I do not know what Policias means, probably Police?)

So back to you, what are you doing now?

  • 1) I’m agreeing that I’d rather drop the money on FurnitureTV.com

    2) Watching TV

    ;) !

  • DN Champ says:

This is I belive the MAJOR reason why so many are put off. If not mentioned about the renewal fee, they can be in for a huge surprise. More education needs to be placed on this extension for it to work better

  • As the former head of sales for The .TV Corporation, I have heard every complaint under the sun. Yes, the prices are high but folks are still presumably paying these fees (I guess we’d have to ask Demand Media to confirm).
One thing I’d like to point out, regardless of which extension you’re talking about, ALL domains are “rented”. Just try missing your rent payment one year (annual registration fee) and see how quickly you’ll lose your name.
Similar to real property in the United States, you may “own” your home free and clear (no mortgage), but miss one property tax bill and watch as the government takes your home. At the end of the day, we are “renting” just about everything.
One other thing, I suspect that in the months and years to come, we will see .com “premium pricing” too. Not only in the secondary market, but from registrars selling NEW registrations. TBD.
So, what am I doing? Domaining!

  • RKB says:

Wow…..it doesn’t make sense. They won’t let people register by paying genuine fees like .com/.net etc but they will just keep them under registry ownership for years. Well, it doesn’t cost them to keep it I guess.

Btw, I never bought a .tv just because I don’t want to wake up one day and find out I have to pay 1000s for annual renewals per domain.

  • Namecake says:

Tiered pricing has been suggested for .coms as well.
Verisign and other existing gTLD operators are almost being invited to ask for their contracts to be amended, and in effect get the same treatment as the new gTLD’s in regards the elimination of pricing caps. I think we all know where this would lead..

  • Rob Sequin says:

    David,

Good to see you here. Now that you are the former head of sales, what do you think about the .tv extension.

    My take on this article:

The upside is these good .tv domains are available and not off the market in some domainers portfolio.

You might be able to negotiate the renewal price down especially if you are going to reg for a couple years.

Lastly, when you register a premium domain, you lock in that renewal rate.

It would be very bad business for them to raise a customer’s premium renewal fee.

  • Hi Rob,

All is well. Good to hear from you too.
I personally do not own any .tv domains either but I still like the extension. It certainly makes sense for anyone in the rich media space that has a compelling site to share. The fees are high and maybe you’re right, you might be able to negotiate on the renewal rate if you register the name(s) for a longer period of time. Seems like everything today is negotiable!
In response to RKB, while I ran the premium names for .TV, we were always very specific about the renewal fees. I really don’t know how Demand Media currently explains renewal rates to their customers today but I trust they are very clear about them.

  • Niko Younts says:

The reality is David is 100% correct, we rent nearly everything in our lives. I can triple-reassure you however, that dot tv (.TV), isn’t going anywhere.

Over the past three years, I’ve travelled to nearly a dozen countries around the world, including 80% of the US states. DOT TV is everywhere. It was in the Turks and Caicos. It was in Mexico. It was in Germany. It was in Sweden. It was in France. DOT TV is in Japan, just as it is in China, Iran, Canada, and South America.

TV is TV, period. All professional and educated arguments really stop at this point. The branding behind DOT TV is–and will be–forever embedded in the minds of humans, on a GLOBAL scale, period. It is most likely the most undervalued tld on the planet.

If DOT TV, were to come out today as a new TLD, if would be undoubtably the hottest thing since sliced bread. The way I see it, even if Tuvalu didn’t exist, the “.TV” tld would have been created for the Internet-as the traditional TV and human computing continue to merge into one device.

DOT TV makes too much sense–for it not to make sense. Like David, I’ve heard every negative spin under the sun as well, mostly by *uneducated, “domainers”, typically, with short pockets and short stemmed business mentalities.

What people fail to comprehend is very simple. DOT COM, although the first–is obviously not the last tld, and surely will not be the only viable route available to web entrepreneurs around the globe. I’ve discovered, and interviewed dozens and dozens of companies about their dot tv properties, and the most interesting interviews come from the companies that do not own their domain in dot com.

Here is one reply: “We don’t need it, we don’t care. We are not domainers–we are a business, with a brand, and we are executing our business model through our brand, without a dot com.”

This is just one of many–but point being, for every naive and negative “.TV sucks” comment, take this one piece of advice before publicly making a fool of yourself.

Educate yourself. Follow the money. Follow the technology. Follow the leader(s).

VeriSign is a (or THE) leader.

Million and billion dollar media companies are also leaders.

Video, live broadcasting, and rich media–is not a luxury. It is the future of ALL content delivery, and the future is now.

With every story, you can surely manipulate and twist it to your liking, but at the end of the day, DOT TV means something, and is literally growing every day. A few years ago, I spoke my voice–and no one listened. Over the past two+ years, every single month a few million or billion dollar company invests in–and develops a .TV brand. To those on the fence, my two cents of religious and unparalleled research points to a few simple facts that can not be ignored, which indicates not only was I correct in investing in the space, but we are at level 1 of 100,000,000 with the value of “generic and geo” .TV domains.

I would suggest people review the following sites to form more educated opinions.

    Verisign.TV
    Verisign.com
    http://www.TV
    http://www.enom.com/domains/tv_names_browse.asp
    Allthings.TV

    Then, I would invite you to review some dot tv sites;

    NHL.TV
    MLB.TV
    TNT.TV
    TBS.TV
    PacificNetwork.TV
    WesternAustralia.TV
    Breitbart.TV
    iReport.TV
    Boston.TV
    VBS.TV
    Vougue.TV
    MTV.TV
    Justin.TV
    USTREAM.TV
    OceanCity.TV
    USAPolitics.TV
    IndyTube.TV
    Vator.TV
    MissWorld.TV

…Do you really think DOT TV is a fad? These companies although sometimes slow to market, or comprehension with trends, are not in this case. It’s a safe bet none of these companies use/develop .net, .info, .us, .biz, .ws, .name, etc… How can one “honestly” not see the growth potential with .TV? In my eyes, at the moment in the market, and in time, anyone who still says they do not understand, or believe in .TV, are simply not willing to accept the reality that the once “invisible” dot com market–and domain market, is changing.

    The final word:

Verisign/Enom.TV can NOT and will NOT raise any annual renewal fees unless the domain expires, geez guys, wake up.

  • AR says:

The constant conversation about premium fees being raised and the ridiculous pricing has become stale. Premium pricing will continue to stay and there may be an argument for some of the prices not making sense, there is a reasoning behind it. Also, let’s not forget about the names that are not classified as premiums. Most folks were willing to paying the 2 years / $70 rates for .com’s in the early days, so what’s the big deal with $15.99 a year for .TV? Quite frankly, if the tiered pricing happens in other extensions, it will only make the premium pricing argument that much weaker. There is this constant noice about premiums being raised. Let’s be clear. Once a name is registered (premium), it can not be raised unless it is dropped. All in all, the extension is gaining major awareness daily and don’t be fooled by all the negative commentary. These same folks are purchasing .TV’s behind the scenes.

  • I am betting on the .tv extension as well!
