So JoeThePlumber it is ?

The fact that all  major extensions of JoethePlumber is taken does not bother me. In fact someone even went as far as registering the .eu

What I find most interesting is that Joethe—-  is taken, try it out, Joethemechanic, even JoetheHandyman, all taken . Is this a new naming convention for blue collar jobs? Statistically, blue collar domains seldom attract super sales but who knows with the introduction of Joetheplumber to lime light, we may be dancing to a new tune. It is rumored that the owner of Joetheplumber.com has been offered 800K.

What do you make of all this?

  • Domainers gone mad. If the people who purchased have some money, they might keep renewing…

If spectators that barely understand the business = all drops next year.

  • I’ve gone mad as well… LOL. Taking advantage of mindshare is what domainers were born to do… sometime succeed and more than often fail… just look at what drops daily: field of broken dreams. http://godrops.com

  • Greg B says:

I doubt they’ll be dropped. First of all it isn’t as if it is a fad that started in the last two weeks – most of the joethelawyer names were registered years ago.

Secondly, had it been jimtheplumber maybe I’d agree that they would drop but there is a common english saying where “joe” is always used as in a sarcastic “Who are you, Joe lumberjack?” or “She thinks that she is Joe carpenter”.

Regardless, I think it perfectly valid and there are lots of “BobTheLawyer” and “PeteTheElectrician” type domains taken, and years ago too. My name is Greg and while I have no intentions of it I could be “GregTheDomainer” and while I might not be able to sell it that easy I do think it would be memorable and that I would become known as that.

Of course, “domainer” isn’t exactly a popular profession but I’ll bet there are a lot of plumbers named Greg and GregThePlumber.com would be a decent name for a plumber named Greg in a smaller locale.

I doubt it’d ever be worth more that a few hundred dollars but I see all sorts of mailing lists that sell domains for 20 dollars and probably all you’d have to do is put up a mini-site, get it indexed and ranking well and put a “buy this domain” button on it and wait for a plumber named Greg to find it. So it takes 4 years, still a decent return.

It almost seems as if I’m trying to talk myself into it – if I had a bunch of extra money I would consider taking the 20 best professions and the 20 most popular names and registering those 400 domains. Not because I would have dreams of a half million per domain but because I would figure I could double my money within 5 years.

You watch though, if someone else makes a big news splash that involves some “Joe The carpenter” and maybe a new TV reality show called “Joe The Baker” starts up – if from now on every politician says things like “this legistlation affects Joe the salesman” it could take off a bit – certainly there has been a lot of branding value done by the debate – if you started up a nationwide “JoeTheButcher” chain of franchised butcher shops you would have a few hundred million dollars worth of branding already done, another few million in advertisments and buzz to set the concept a little more firmly in the minds of the consumer and you’d have a well branded trademark.
