ShoeThrower.com/net/org; Hot or Not ?

Since most people tend to read only the top lines, I will start by stating that I do not own any of these domains.
I was just wondering if this kind of domaining is of any benefit. And if not why do people keep doing it. If you are not aware by now, these domains are referencing the unfortunate incident that happened to President Bush in Iraq recently.
One other shocker is that the .net was registered before the .com .

Does this signify that :
a) One or all of them have no clue
b) One of them is so clued in  he is actually ahead of the game with a plan
c)  ———————————— Put yours here

Back to the main question I have , What are your views on this kind of names? Hot or Not?
I personally believe they are ebay domains, that is domains you can offload to another clueless while the news is still hot but these  particular domains might make for a different strategy since there is some culture behind the act itself.

What do you think?

    Hi Frankie,

I too have the habit of checking what’s been registered
following breaking news, (funny or disastrous ).

It’s surprising to see that most of the time, domains
associated with breaking news event are immediately registered!

Maybe they do get traffic initially, but I don’t think that this traffic would last. As soon as they stop showing it in loops on the news, traffic would go down.

Do you think JoethePlumber.com is still enjoying high traffic these days? I doubt it.

    Definitely not long lasting traffic.

One of the questions I ask when I look at domains is:
is the domain eternal. i.e will it stand the test of time.
will it attract people even in 100 years. Generics are!

    beijing2008.com’s time is over!
but Olympics.com will be around for a long time.

it’s a good thing here that the International Olympic Committee own both and point them to beijing2008.cn

my (c) would be that they are domainers who are looking for a quick way of making a buck or two since they can relate their domain with something that’s going on and on in the news. its Easier to Convince/fool a potential buyer, when the media is hammering the news in our brains.

NOT HOT. I believe they’re regged by those clueless to a name’s actual value/usefulness, who just want to be the first to grab a ‘headline’ related domain. The only one who ‘benefits’, is the registrars!

And from my perspective, the only ‘unfortunate’ part of this incident, was that the thrower missed. Twice!!

  • Perchboy says:

Grabbing those domains was quick thinking, kind of like what Mr. Bush did.

However, I’m not sure how to give those domain names ‘legs’ except to maybe sell them to the shoe thrower himself.

He definitely garnered his 15 minutes of fame and may be able to parlay such domains into a profitable business. I simply don’t know how.

Kudos to you for your resourcefulness.

These domains are just good for a week or so, then no traffic. Bad investment imo.

  • Scott says:

Picking up names like this is not enough, unless the breaking news is huge.

But you simply can not dismiss the potential these things can have. One of the biggest blogs on the net is based on a similar meme: ICanHasCheezburger.com. The reason why it was successful was that the person had the drive to reg the domain, put up a site and put content on that site in no time at all. Now, it’s THE go-to site for LOLcats, which was a big meme. Still is.

Now, I’m not saying you should go out and get every ShoeThrower domain possible. But if you have the resources to get a full website up in 24 hours after the meme hits, it can be successful. And you only need one domain to do it, not dozens.

And who cares if it won’t last 100 years? We won’t be here that long. A site like this most likely won’t be your top site. It won’t be your #1 money maker. It would be just another slot in your portfolio, just like anything else.

It’s another possible revenue stream. And I know it’s not for everyone. But I don’t think it’s fair to say that people who try this as a way to diversify their portfolio are clueless. Ask YTMND.com.

Remember, just like most of your domains, the true value comes with a website attached to it.

  • @ Scott,
It is obvious that you are an expert on this field. I was hoping you comment and you did. Thanks for the insight. You make a lot of sense on so many levels. The key ingredient you stated is a “site in less than 24 hrs” I can dig that. I must however say this was an aspect I hadn’t considered.

    @Scott,
you are right when you say that it’ll work if a user can pull off a website quickly!
    unfortunately, few think quick enough!

here’s a nice example where ShoeThrower.com could be
used. They’re quick to make the game but not quick enough to get the name.

“And who cares if it won’t last 100 years?”
    I do :)
I intend to pass on my domains to my children in my will

  • Scott says:

    @belshass

You’re right, few can think quick enough. And even for those that do, putting up a site quick enough is not an easy task. I tried it once with a meme, even was able to pick up the main domain. I tried getting a site up in less than 24 hours and quickly found my weakness: my limited knowledge in site building.

Next time I may just pay someone to do it, but that could cause problems as well if the meme never pans out.

The meme I chose ended up morphing into the Fail meme anyways. So now it’s a sub-meme of Fail. But I believe 100% that if i got a site up in 24 hours and advertised it, it could’ve done relatively well.

  • Serf says:

I bought the domain name with the guys name (one of many different spellings). You never know..this guy could turn into a cultural icon of sorts. A Saudi man just offered $10 million for the shoes, he might pay $10,000 for the domain name- just a gamble. Interested ?? http://www.MuntadharAl-Zeidi.com – go make an offer on sedo.com

  • Can someone please tell me in detail, or link me to an appropriate website where i can learn to create a basic login system using html. . Thanks..
