How do you decide what domain name to renew and what name to let expire?

While chatting with a pal the other day over at Twitter. He asked me a rather interesting question “How do you decide what domain to re-register and which one to drop?’ You see over at twitter I give away free domains once in while if I do not want to renew them so this I guess is what prompted the question. It got me thinking. If one person wants to know maybe someone else might care for such information. This is not a technical manual on domain registration or ownership but just a simple approach I personally follow especially in these  precarious times in our economy.

So without much ado here are the steps I follow:

Reason behind Registration
The first thing I consider is why I registered the name in the first place. This is a very important factor because some names by virtue of this singular factor may (more…)

Domain Marketing the Obama way: Eight steps to Success

This is by no means a political post. This is simply observing, learning and making a practical application of what works in one industry and its relevance in our domaining empires. I will not bore you with semantics, I will just lay down what I have learnt so far.

1. Be decisive even if it means  you will sometimes be wrong.
The Obama campaign piloted by David Plouff were so decisive that discipline quickly became the bench mark of their campaign. Once they made up their mind, they stuck to the plan. Decide what direction you want to go with your domain, decide on a path and stick to it.

2. Have a Tight Circle.
The importance of closely knit people you trust and can bounce ideas on can never be over emphasized. You don’t want to be one of those who changes their plan daily based on what they read on a blog or the forums. Sometimes this things are mere figments of someones imagination. Every one needs a mentor. Everyone can benefit from wise councel.

3. Stick with the plan.
Making a plan on how to market your domain is one thing. Having the discipline to stick with it is another. This singular trait is one of the most underlining elements of the Obama campaign

4. Sweat the Details
Yes, take time to sweat the small stuff. Simple things like knowing who to address your sales proposal to can be a powerful deal bender. If your plan involves developing your brand, making sure that every details of the site is taking care of will pay off in the long run.

5. Understand your brand
You need to understand your domain. Who will it appeal to. What will the end user be looking out for. For example if you own a geo specific domain, understanding the median income of your potential customers will go a long way in helping you set an effective price.

6. Go Digital
Nothing needs to be said here. You are already there so use it effectively. Now the question is since  you may be dealing with a select market, will digital be there preferred mode of communication. Never under estimate the power of social networks as this venues puts you in the same proximity with your end user at virtually no cost to  you.

7. Use Caution
Be very very careful. Avoid trademarked names, you could loose your shirt in a lawsuit.  Do not buy LLLL because everyone is doing it. As one of the Rick’s once said. “if you are not a step ahead, it means  you are one step behind”

There is an eight step which is the most important. Pray like your domain business depends on it because it does. Despite the fact that Obama is a Dem, Churches and people round the world were praying and fasting for him. The power of prayer is something you need to experience for yourself.
