A Time Like This….

This is probably one of the great times of opportunity in our generation. A great time to be young, a great time to be a domainer and a fabulous time to have cash in hand. If you have some cash that is not committed to any emergencies, then you may be able to rewrite your economic history in a couple of years. The .com bubble of the 90’s left a lot of people broke but it also catapulted some people beyond there wildest expectations.

We are at that crossroad again. Let’s say for the purpose of this discussion, you invest 10K in the coming weeks in one or two well researched names. These names or name will be able to fetch  you approximately 50K each in the next five years. 5 years from now, domains will be bigger, the recession might be as gone as disco. The best part of it all is that you would have bought real low catalysed by the current economic climate and sell at sunnier times coupled with  the increased value of a name then 5 years older.

Opportunities are there for everyone. The big boys  will sell some of there lesser premium names to the mid rangers  in order to consolidate and buy even better names or real estate or even banks.  the mid-rangers will sell most of there premium names,  to buy the names from the big boys and so it trickles down the chain.

Also in this times, some lucky domainer will hand-reg the catch phrase of tomorrow and his is another story. (Here is to hoping MaxedOutMoms.com makes the cut)

America will survive, she always does.

Things will be good again, it always does. Remember we are the country in who’s currency is minted ” In God we Trust” All we have to do now is pray it, and believe it.

How Do You Relax?

Did you say “relax” ? yes I did. How do you relax? how do you wind down? do you pride yourself at being a 24/7 domainer? Due to the nature of our business, domaining is fun for a lot of us but not withstanding, it is still work. Though a saying goes that if you find a job  you like then you never have to work again. A lot of Brain neurons go into the research and registration of a domain name. Don’t get me started on buying a domain from the secondary market; usually more is at stake, more mental energy is expended. Managing a portfolio of any size is not child’s play you constantly have to weigh the environment, should I park ?, should I develop and which? and with whom do I park? just to mention a few of the rudimentary decision you have to make.

Long story short,  you need to rest sometimes. You need to give your batteries a 24hr hour period to recharge every seventh day.  This directive is straight from the manufacturer “You shall work six days, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even during plowing time and harvest you shall rest.”  Exodus 34:21(New American Standard Bible)

Even God had to rest.

”By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.” Genesis 2:2

Note that the Bible never said that God was tired, but God still needed to rest. Creation like domaining is a creative and mental process with little or  no physical activity. God spoke the Heavens and Earth into being. With a few click of the mouse, you can create a brand new domain name. If God rested, so should you. Manage your domains for six days but on the seventh day, you should observe a period of rest. You know this is also a commandment which means it is not really optional it is the fourth commandment “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.”There is something pretty cool about this commandment though, it comes with benefits. Rest has been scientifically proven to put you at your best. Check the domain industry, more senseless names are registered during periods of fatigue than when one is alert. Resting will also give you the time and opportunity to reflect on your Creator, family, and surroundings .

Resting is not planning on the seventh day what you will do the next day. Resting is putting everything called work to a stop. For a domainer, that will mean unplugging yourself from your computer, your Blackberry email. All emails can wait till the next day. For domain moonlighters who do most of their work on weekends, you just have to find a way to fit them all in the other six days.

Try Rest, Reflect on why you are here (not this website, Earth) and who knows, this might just be the beginning of the best part of your domaining career.

Please I will like to know your views and how  you relax. To respond click on the heading of this post and it will take you to a fresh page. Go to the end of the post in the new page and you can respond to the post then,

MCC.com — The state of our industry

When Rick Latonna first indicated in his newsletter that MCC.com will be amongst the domains auctioned off at the just concluded auction. I was real curious to know what this gem will fetch. I will say that I was way off the mark.
MCC.com was registered in November of 1985. That is 23 years ago!
—-wait for it— MCC.com is the 4th .com ever registered in the history of the world. WOW!

If any domain qualifies as art, then MCC.com is it. While I am not sure of who and who has owned it in the past, I bet it must have some real good and strong provenance.  To crown it all, this domain makes approximately $100 USD a day That will be roughly 3K a month. Nothing to sneeze at.

MCC.com was snatched up at $195,000 dollars. While the price reflects on the general state of the economy, I say kudos to the buyer. Nice catch.

And to Rick I say Bravo for having the nerves to auction such a formidable name.

Most people will hold on to names like that  almost forever, forgetting live as we know it ends here on earth. In after life, one needs no domain name, the only name you need stamped on  your passport after all  this is over will be the name of Christ.

Thanks to  you and all  those who make domaining an exciting profession, hobby or sidekick.

God bless you all.

New American Standard Bible (©1995)

 Deuteronomy 8:18
“But you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, that He may confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.

Kentucky Seizes Gambling Domains; What is next?

The very day I published on my new blog an article titled “What if America sues? A case against Geo “ , happens to be the very day the Commonwealth of Kentucky decided to take action on gambling domains. I learnt of this latest development just yesterday from an article by ”The Domains” blog on how the Commonwealth of Kentucky has seized 141 gambling domains, I think my earlier post on Geo domains was right on the money.

Whether or not Kentucky’s gripe is upheld in court is not exactly the point of contemplation here, but the fact that they are setting precedence. The next State will just do it better or pass laws that favor their action.

I think as the Internet gets more mainstream, States (including countries) may realize how much revenue they are missing from not owning there .com. They will finally realize how much power the domain owner has by owning the most accessible and cost effective first impression of their respective States. Some states will buy, some will collaborate with the Geo owner and some will sue. Those who sue will most likely win if they have proper representation and most will.

Winning will be much easier for the State when the Geo domain in question has carried advertising on subjects the State feels are detrimental to its image. They can claim bad faith real easy. A simple example can be anything from porn, tobacco sales to minors, call girls, gambling and so on. A weird scenario might be selling booze on Sunday from online store advertising in a Geo domain such as Charleston which abolished booze sale on Sundays, — weird, and funny but true. All these are hypothetical examples and could be factually inaccurate, but  you get my drift.

A couple of years ago, no body could have foreseen that 3 letter .com will be preyed upon by reverse hijackers like they are today. The fact of all this matter is this, for the big guys, this might just be like a snake bite on an elephant, painful, time consuming but they can weather it. They have the legal resources and know how. For the more average domainer who is banking on retiring on his Geo investment, this could be like trying to pry oneself out of the mouth of a giant anaconda.

This post is not to scare you away from Geo domains. Far from it because Geo ownership can be very rewarding financially, however make sure you have made a careful review of the process and evaluated your ability to take risk. Always seek wise counsel before you make a major investment. This is a no brain-er I guess.

“A wise man will hear and increase in learning, and a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel.” (Proverbs 1:5)

Proverbs 24:6  New American Standard Bible (©1995)
“For by wise guidance you will wage war, And in abundance of counselors there is victory”

All eyes on TRAFFIC

It is past noon for me here in the beautiful State of South Carolina.  The weather is just spectacular today. All eyes are currently on the upcoming TRAFFIC auction. A lot of excitement. Regretfully I will not be biding. Expecting a baby in a couple of weeks so I have to be real prudent with my resources.

About a year ago, I was fortunate to score a sale at the TRAFFIC auction. I had 6 names listed. This time around I opted not to submit any names for reasons best known to me. (Not particularly a wise decision)

Anyway I wish everyone good luck. The excitement usually lingers for a week or two after the auction as all forums and blogs gets flooded with ” see what I bought, what do you think it is worth”  or I cannot believe sosoandso.com went for x amount of dollars.

Hey I just realized I may not have any baby themed domains and I am expecting a baby. The closest I have is ChildElectronics.com and ChildIdentityProtection.com
Very unlike me. I usually acquire domains from my life experiences.

Domaining for tough times

FrankieI just came back from the grocery store after today’s Sunday service. No matter how tough the economy is, people are still buying food and some are even trying to eat healthy despite the increased cost of a healthier choice. This post is not about the price of sliced bread but whether in tough times, you should just fold up and quit? Actually this is a good season for domaining, this economic hard times presents brilliant opportunities. More people are reading about Hybrids, Solar, Organic, and Eco  just to mention a few of tomorrow’s pacesetters. These  hard times could present a better tomorrow for you domain enterprise. It is Robert Schuller who said “Tough times don’t last but tough people do” Guess what, he is as right as night and day.

The words of the preacher in  Ecclesiastes 11:6

New American Standard Bible (©1995)
Sow your seed in the morning and do not be idle in the evening, for you do not know whether morning or evening sowing will succeed, or whether both of them alike will be good.

I think the book of Ecclesiastes is one of the literal masterpiece of one of the wisest men ever. His name was King Solomon. He never bought a .com or dot anything but he bought and built domains of his days. He is also credited with building the biggest and most beautiful Temple for the Lord here on earth in his time. Now that is a domain! .This quote from his work is also a call to diversification.  Develop some of your sites to mini-sites or full sites. Do something don’t just fold your hands and wait for tomorrow to come. Those that will rule tomorrow are those laying foundations now.

One final tip. Do not ignore the drop list, more and more domains are being dropped and once in a while you could turn up a gem

PPC down — real down

Frankie
Frankie

Ok, this economy thing must be hitting people real hard. My PPC (Pay Per Click) has be slowly creeping to the south pole. People must be seriously holding on to their purses so they are no longer shopping seriously like they used to. For the last couple of weeks has been a nightmare. On the bright side, my adsense sites are doing a little better. Maybe because I just added adsense to a popular website which up till now has been devoid of any major ad push. I am still toying with what the best choice for mini-sites will be as that is the way to go at least to weather the storm for now.

Future Domain Trend?

Frankie
Frankie

What will tomorrow’s domain trend be? I remember three weeks after I bought my first domain, Forsalebyowner.com sold for 750K. That to me was the best domain sale ever at the time. Firstly because the owner owned this domain for less than 3 months or so prior to the sale. I kept asking myself, would I have registered this name? The answer at the time was “No” because I would have considered it too long, that was grossly against the trend then and it is still against the trend now.

I can go on and on and how .nets was generally ignored. It was almost always .com or nothing. But again the .nets has grown to be competent members of any portfolio.

Ask yourself, what are you passing on now?

Are you shunning the .us ?

What if a new search engine becomes popular because It brings search back to home and favors .us over any other extension when a search is from the USA ?.

It pays to sit back and ponder.

(.US makes  up about 3% of my portfolio)

What if America Sues? A case against Geo

Some years ago, some dude who owns Corinthians.com and used it to publish Bible verses from its namesake lost the name Corianthians.com to Corianthians football club of Brazil via a WIPO decision (This decision was later reversed by a US court)  If  a company can come after someone for their name and even claim common law use, what stops a country from going to arbitration for its name.com? If madonna can sue and be awarded Madonna.com, what stops America from sueing for you  know what or other host of coutries sueing for their domains?.

Just a case for thought. I will like to read your views

Maxed-out Moms the new Soccer Mom?

Has anyone been following what Time magazine is calling Soccer moms this time around? They are the maxed-out moms. A demographic that is so powerful that both political parties are spending big to grab.

Well I just regged Maxed-out-moms.com and here is to hoping that it becomes as poupular as soccer moms. There is even a book on the subject.
